Your Debit Mastercard is accepted everywhere Mastercard is accepted at over 11 million merchants worldwide.

Debit and Credit Card Fraud

A data breach at a merchant is becoming more and more common. What can you do to protect yourself? The first step is to make sure your contact information is up-to-date at the credit union. A data breach happens when fraudsters hack into a merchant’s or card processor’s computer network and steal customers credit or debit card data. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can personally do to protect a merchant from getting hacked or prevent your card number from landing in the hands of a fraudster when a merchant is compromised. However, you can rest assured that Route 31 Credit Union will take every action necessary to protect you in the event that your credit or debit card number is involved in a compromise.

When a breach like this occurs, the credit card company, such as Visa or Master Card, identifies the issue and sends a list of the compromised cards to financial institutions, such as Route 31 Credit Union. They advise that the cards may have been compromised. Route 31 Credit Union then takes immediate action to contact the member and reissue the cards to the cardholders for their security. What you can do, however, is regularly monitor your account statements and notify your financial institution whenever you spot something suspicious. You can download our mobile app and go to “Manage My Cards” to set up alerts to notify you when a transaction has occurred on your card and lock your card when not in use. It’s also important to update your phone number, address and email in our system, so we can reach you if your card is suspected of fraud.

To Report a lost or stolen Debit Card call the credit union at 231-726-4871. After hours call 1-888-241-2510.

If your Debit Card is denied or if you receive a fraud alert call and want to speak with someone live, call the credit union at 231-726-4871. After hours call 1-888-241-2440.

To Report a dispute on your Debit Card call 833-395-0404

Fraud Detection & Notification System

Route 31 Credit Union’s fraud alert team will send a text message to the member if suspicious activity is detected on their debit card. The text message will include transaction details such as date, dollar amount, merchant name, location, etc. If the transaction was authorized and valid, members can select “Yes”. If the transaction was not authorized, members can select “No” or contact the credit union. If the fraud alert team does not hear back from the member, they will attempt to call the member on the primary phone on the account to verify the transaction. Members must have their cell phone listed as the primary phone number on file with the credit union. If you have any questions, please contact the credit union at 231-726-4871.

Credit or Debit?

When using your debit card, if the cashier asks you if it’s a “credit” or “debit” transaction, answer “credit”. The amount of the transaction will still be deducted from your checking account, but it won’t count toward your total debit withdrawals. As a “credit” transaction you can simply sign your name instead of using your PIN.

Say “Credit” to simply sign your name at retailers and restaurants.
